Murray N. Rothbard (1926-1995) who wrote this book in 1974, is an economist, political philosopher, and historian. He majored in economics and mathematics at Columbia University and got a Ph.D. in economics. During his time at Columbia University, he found out about Ludwig von Mises' weekly seminar at New York University and became a regular participant in the seminar. Rothbard read Mises' Human Action. This helped him fully understand how humans and society work, why libertarianism is the superior political ideology, and how the free-market economic system works.

Rothbard, who absorbed Mises’ ideas, further developed consistent free-market principles based on Mises' Human Action. He developed and expanded the libertarian political philosophy, which was limited to a minimum state. Today, we call it "Anarcho-capitalism". A summarization of anarcho-capitalism is as follows. It contains a radical and consistent concept that "government interference and monopoly in the economy are always detrimental and ineffective. Therefore, even national defense, security, and justice, which were considered to be the inherent work of government, can be provided effectively in the free market." One of Rothbard's most iconic books is Man, Economy, and State, which deals with the economic concepts above based on Mises' Human Action. Mises evaluated the book and said,

"Dr. Rothbard is already well known as the author of several excellent monographs. Now, as the result of many years of sagacious and discerning meditation, he joins the ranks of eminent economists by publishing a voluminous work, a systematic treatise on economics.....Now such a book as Man, Economy, and State offers to every intelligent man an opportunity to obtain reliable information concerning the great controversies and conflicts of our age. It is certainly not easy reading and asks for the utmost exertion of one's attention. But there are no shortcuts to wisdom."

Mises acknowledged his limitations and praised Rothbard's work. Murray Rothbard is credited with inheriting and expanding the ideas of Mises.

His most popular books include Man, Economy, and State, The Ethics of Liberty, For A New Liberty, Power and Market, Conceived in Liberty, and The Case For a 100% Gold Dollar.

As the title suggests, Anatomy of the State breaks down and completely shatters stereotypes such as "The state is an essential institution in our society" and "The state is a necessary evil" through his coherent and deep analysis. Also, this analysis shows that democratic government, which has been widely adopted today and is considered the ideal form, is not the best.

Rothbard also shows that one of the claims to the origin of the state, the “social contract theory,” is completely wrong. According to him, the state itself was never created by a social contract, it was born on conquest and exploitation. Thus its legitimacy is inherently very weak. So the minority in power allied with the intellectuals to secure the loyalty of the dominated, making everything done by the ruling class "legitimate" and "sacred.”

Today, intellectuals, in the name of democracy, have made the public adapt to the domination and exploitation of government by the sophistry of 'we are the government'. In this book, Rothbard has shown that ideological legitimacy is very weak because the state reigns over the people based on lies. He points out that the state's greatest fear is independent intellectual criticism.

We have to be thinking individuals. We must realize that the state's rule and control over us can not be justified. This book will help you stand as an individual.
