인간은 서로 완벽하게 조화를 이루며 살지 않는다. 오히려 우리는 몇 번이고 갈등을 겪는다. 그리고 갈등의 근원은 항상 같다: 바로 재화의 희소성이다. 나는 주어진 재화 G로 X를 하고 싶은데, 다른 사람 역시 같은 재화로 Y를 동시에 하고 싶어한다. 그러나 나와 그가 동시에 G를 가지고 X와 Y를 하는 것은 불가능하기 때문에, 나와 그 사람 사이에 충돌이 발생한다. 만약 재화의 과잉이 존재한다면, 예를 들어 G가 무제한적으로 공급될 수 있다면, 우리는 충돌을 피할 수 있을 것이다. 우리 둘 다 G를 개인적 목적으로 사용할 수 있다. 그러나 대부분의 재화는 이런 과잉이 불가능하다. 인류가 에덴동산을 떠난 이후로, 우리 환경은 희소성이 존재해왔고, 앞으로도 그럴 것이다.
Men do not live in perfect harmony with each other. Rather, again and again conflicts arise between them. And the source of these conflicts is always the same: the scarcity of goods. I want to do X with a given good G and you want to do simultaneously Y with the very same good. Because it is impossible for you and me to do simultaneously X and Y with G, you and I must clash. If a superabundance of goods existed, i.e., if, for instance, G were available in unlimited supply, our conflict could be avoided. We could both simultaneously do ‘our thing’ with G. But most goods do not exist in superabundance. Ever since mankind left the Garden of Eden, there has been and always will be scarcity all-around us.ㅉ
